01/12/08 Fortunately it wasn't quite as cold as back in December at Hidden Falls. Wayne, Jean, and I showed up at about 1pm and had to wait an hour before getting on the ice due to crowds. After that, we had the place to ourselves and climbed till dark. Only downer of the day was getting back to the parking lot to a smashed mirror and dent in the door from someone backing into our car.
01/14/07 Jean, Beth, and I headed back up to Hidden Falls for a chilly day of ice climbing. Only one other group there and we had a ball on the left side of the main flow. Since it was much colder this time, the ice was real solid and brittle.
12/16/06 While in Estes Park for our first anniversary we brought along all the necessary stuff for a fun w/end of snowshoeing and ice climbing. Based on beta we found and the guide books, we decided on Hidden Falls in the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mtn National Park. An easy 1hr approach and easy to top rope. We arrived at the Falls around 9:30am as five guys were leaving. The other four people there were gone by noon and we had the whole place to ourselves. We did a climb on the left flow first then hopped on the main flow once a couple guys left that I happened to know from a crevasse rescue course last year. FUN FUN FUN!!! Our arms burned like crazy since it was our first time out and luckily my helmet saved me from impaling myself in the head when I fell off trying a mixed route. |
